Trading Standards

Trading Standards is a regulatory and enforcement service of local government whose primary role is as a consumer and commercial law enforcement and advice service.

Trading Standards, the 'consumer watchdogs' of the council, are the link between consumers and businesses where there are problems with faulty, dangerous, misdescribed or mispriced goods or services.

The range of functions undertaken by Trading Standards includes :

  • Age restricted sales (alcohol, cigarettes, fireworks, videos, butane lighter refills etc).
  • Animal health and welfare, and diseases of animals.
  • Consumer credit, hire purchase and moneylending.
  • Counterfeiting and Copyright (CDs DVDs clothing etc).
  • Environmental protection.
  • Estate Agency and property misdescriptions.
  • Food standards and composition.
  • Licensing
  • Misdescription of goods and services.
  • Petroleum explosives and poisons.
  • Pricing, price marking and overcharging.
  • Product safety.
  • Road traffic - unroadworthy vehicles and overloaded goods vehicles
  • Weights and measures - goods and equipment.

In addition to these statutory responsibilities Trading Standards provides a 'Consumer Advice' service, to help people to sort out a wide range of shopping and consumer problems.



Our role in Business Advice is to enable local businesses to comply with current trading and commercial law and to maintain consistent enforcement throughout the region, and to provide a national single point of contact for all 'home authority' businesses.


Trading Standards is a quality marked member of the Telford and Wrekin Community Legal Service Partnership and a member of the Telford and Wrekin Consumer Support Network.
