Civil partnership

The Civil partnership Registration Act, allowing same-sex couples many of the benefits previously available only to married couples, came into effect from 5th December 2005.

This legislation enables same-sex couples to enter into civil partnerships, and our Registration Service is delighted to be able to offer this new service.

We are able to offer ceremonies either at the local Register Office or at any of our approved premises.

How does civil partnership differ from marriage?
The government has sought to give civil partners parity of treatment with spouses, as far as is possible, in the rights and responsibilities that flow from forming a civil partnership.

There are a small number of differences between civil partnership and marriage. For example, a civil partnership is formed when the second civil partner signs the relevant document; a civil marriage is formed when the couple exchange spoken words. A man and a woman can opt for a religious or civil marriage ceremony as they choose, whereas formation of a civil partnership will be an exclusively civil procedure.

Who is eligible?
The couple must be of the same sex, not already be in a civil partnership or marriage, be 16 years of age or older, and not be within the prohibited degrees of relationship.

In England and Wales, individuals who are aged 16 and 17 will have to obtain the written consent of their parent(s) or legal guardian(s) before registering a civil partnership.

What arrangements can I make for my civil partnership?
If you want to register a civil partnership, you should be able to give formal notice of your of intention to form a civil partnership at your local register office. Please phone 01952 382444 for advice and information

Where can I register my civil partnership?
You can register your civil partnership at the Register Office, 29 Vineyard Road, Wellington, Telford TF1 1HB, telephone 01952 382444, and at all of our Approved Premises.

What will it cost?

What formal requirements have to be met before registration can take place?
You and your partner will need to each give notice in the area(s) where you have resided for at least seven days. When you give notice, you will be asked to state where you wish the civil partnership registration to take place if a civil partnership is to be registered outside of the area of residence; you and your partner will still need to give notice in the area(s) where you live. When you each give notice, you will be asked to give the date and place where the civil partnership registration is to take place so these details will need to have been first agreed with the local authority where the registration is going to take place.
Example:
If you live in Cannock and your partner lives in Shrewsbury, but you want to register a civil partnership in a country house hotel in Telford & Wrekin, you will have to give notice to your local register office in Cannock and your partner at Shrewsbury register office. When you give this notice, you will both have to be able to give the date and the place where the civil partnership is to be registered, which means that you will have to have arranged this already with the venue and the Telford & Wrekin registration authority.

Will I need to show any documents when I give my Notice?
Yes. In order to give your Notice you will be asked to produce documents as evidence of name, age and residency. For example, you could produce your Birth Certificate and secondary ID such as passport, medical card or a driving licence.

This list is not exhaustive and other documents may also be acceptable. If you have been previously married you will be required to provide evidence of the termination of that marriage, by death, divorce or nullity.

If you have changed your name by deed poll or statutory declaration you will be required to produce that document.

Each party to the partnership will be required to declare their nationality, to enable the Superintendent Registrar to advise you whether any further administrative procedure or legal requirements are needed to ensure the recognition of your partnership in the country of which you are a National.
