At the heart of the Borough is the "New Town" of Telford (designated in 1963), which is a regional focus for population and economic growth - the area is the fastest growing in the West Midlands.

The Borough is also composed of several small towns that existed before the designation of the New Town including Wellington, Dawley, Donnington, Madeley and Oakengates. To the north of Telford is the market town of Newport and situtated on the northern bank of the River Severn is Ironbridge, the birth place of the Industrial Revolution and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Although Telford is the hub of the area's economy and population, the Borough has a significant rural area which is located to the north and west of Telford and covers approximately 72% of the Borough's total area.
