the Environmental Information Regulations, giving an unprecedented
right of access to council and other public

This law applies to 100,000 public bodies including
central government, local government the police and fire
authorities. A list of organisations covered by the act is

Making a Request under FOI
All FOIA requests should be made in writing (for example letter,
fax or email).
There are several ways to do this:
On your request you must clearly state what information you are
requesting and supply your name and address (an email address
counts as a valid address)
Once we receive your request we will let you know, as soon as
possible, whether or not we hold the information . We will then
provide you with the information you have requested within 20
working days maximum. On rare occasions we may not be able to meet
these deadlines and in these cases we will keep you fully informed
of progress. However there are some exemptions that may prevent us
from releasing the information.
The main exemptions are
- personal information (this is dealt with under
seperate legislation - for more information see the
Data Protection Act)
- information relating to the environment
(because this is available under the
Environmental Information Regulations)
- confidential or commercially sensitive information
- information which is readily available by another means or
which we intend to publish in the future
- information we do not have in a recorded form
If we apply an exemption we will tell you and give you the
reason. For more information about the exemptions or the
