Collection of "Personal Identifiers" for Absent Voters - January-February 2007

In 2006 a legislative change required the Council to collect "personal identifiers", the date of birth and the signature, of every absent voter in the Borough. These "personal identifiers" are kept with the absent voter record, and they are checked and verified at elections when a postal vote is opened. This measure is intended to serve as a deterrent to postal voting fraud.

34672 Notices were issued to absent voters requiring them to supply the "personal identifiers".
10430 First reminder notices were issued
5549 Second reminder notices were issued
3437 Postal votes were cancelled because "personal identifiers" were not supplied in time
3437 Cancellation letters were issued, inviting those electors to submit a new absent voting application
800 Electors asked for their absent vote to be cancelled as no longer required
