Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Could you come and cut Telford's 40th birthday cake?

Could you be the guest of honour at an exciting host of themed events to celebrate Telford's 40th birthday.

To mark this milestone, Telford & Wrekin Council and Telford Shopping Centre is organising a 40th birthday party on Sunday 6 July and are looking for a guest of honour to come and cut the birthday cake.

So take yourself back to 1968 and come and join in the fun at Telford Shopping Centre and outside in Southwater Square, next to the ice rink.

To be the guest of honour, organisers simply want to hear from anyone who has a story to tell from 1968 - the year Telford as a town was born.

Maybe you were married in Telford in 1968 or perhaps you were born in that year? Or perhaps you moved into the new town in that year?

The Mayor of Telford & Wrekin, Cllr Bob Groom said: "The event is as much a celebration about Telford's past as it is about its future. It's hoped the event will reach out to all parts of the borough's to come and celebrate all that Telford has to offer."

The free event on 6 July will include street entertainers, fashion shows, memorabilia displays and live bands alongside a Beacon Radio road-show.

A 'Milestones' photographic exhibition will feature key events in the town from 1968 to 2008 whilst local historian, Allan Frost, will sign his book 'Telford 1968, the way we lived then' from 1-3pm.

In the run up to Sunday 6 July, Telford & Wrekin Council and Telford Shopping Centre Management will showcase a number of exhibitions to mark the celebrations.
