Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Council safeguards future of Lilleshall Monument

22 July 2008

The future of the Lilleshall Monument has been safeguarded in a legal move by Telford & Wrekin Council.

The 70-foot high local landmark which stands on top of Lilleshall Hill was erected in honour of the Duke of Sutherland in 1833 but was beginning to crack and was under threat of destabilisation.

Whilst the monument was located on land owned by the Duke of Sutherland, it was unclear who actually owned the monument and consequently, who was responsible for its maintenance.

Following a recommendation from the Scrutiny Commission for Environment & Regeneration, the Council has worked closely with Lilleshall and Donnington Parish Council to determine who legally owns the monument.

After approaching the Duke of Sutherland, the Council has successfully succeeded in transferring the title to the monument and the land immediately surrounding it to the Council.

Council Leader, Cllr Andrew Eade, said: "The Lilleshall Monument is an important landmark in the borough and one that should be preserved for future generations. By legally transferring the monument's deeds to the Council, we have successfully safeguarded its future and its place on Lilleshall hill."
