Telford & Wrekin Council's Environmental Maintenance
has struck Gold at a prestigious awards ceremony at the House of
Commons.
The team was informed earlier in the year that it had won two
Green Apple Environment Awards 2007 - a prestigious annual
international campaign aimed at recognising, rewarding and
promoting environmental best practice around the world.
But it was not until Neighbourhood Services Team Leader Danny
Chetwood and Customer Services Operator Vicky Walker visited the
House of Commons today (Friday 9th November) that they discovered
they had won one Gold and one Bronze award.
The Gold award was won for the council's approach to educating
and engaging with members of the public about their recycling and
waste collections. The Environmental Maintenance team has officers
dedicated to helping people when they feel they are struggling to
recycle or cope with their household waste.
While it was Bronze for the council's corporate Promises scheme,
which sets out standards and timescales residents can expect from
the authority when dealing with environmental issues such as
graffiti, abandoned vehicles, and fly tips.
The Green Apple Environment Awards are now in their 14th year
and this year attracted more than 500 nominations. Top winners will
be put forwards for the European Business Awards for the
Environment.
Councillor Stephen Bentley, Cabinet Member for Environment &
Regeneration, said: "This is excellent news and thoroughly
deserved. Officers work hard to improve the local environment
across the borough for residents and visitors.
"These awards cover a wide range of services ranging from
rubbish and recycling to environmental crime, including graffiti,
abandoned vehicles, fly tips, and dangerous potholes - all of which
aim to help keep Telford clean, green and
safe." |
