Borough celebrates £200 million investment to transform
education
A £200 million investment which will transform the
face of education in Telford & Wrekin has been announced today,
Friday.
This is a major part of Telford & Wrekin Council's vision to
raise achievement, aspirations and self-esteem by creating an
inclusive Learning City.
Through the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme,
every secondary school in the borough will be either rebuilt or
renewed with £150 million investment from the DfES.
Each location will become a "learning community" with extensive
facilities for holiday-time and community use. Council involvement
will also enable many primary schools to be part of this exciting
development.
This is the largest single investment that Telford & Wrekin
schools have ever seen and will allow the council to invest fully
in the future of its children and young people.
Today's funding decision follows a bid by Telford & Wrekin
Council to the Government in October 2006.
As well as offering earlier opening and later closing times to
pupils, the new "learning communities" will be accessible at
weekends and during school holidays. They will also be open to the
whole community for sport, cultural and leisure activities.
Detailed planning will now begin and building work will take
place throughout the borough over a five-year period.
Cllr Keith Austin, leader of the council, said: "Today's
announcement is the result of months of hard work by the council to
secure the funding.
"This is a major initative which will put children and young
people firmly at the heart of everything we do. Building Schools
for the Future is about so much more than just building or
remodelling schools. This is the catalyst for the transformation of
education in the borough, where every school plays a vital role in
the community, delivering a range of services throughout the day
and into the evening."
Cllr Liz Clare, cabinet member with repsonsibility for Youth
Affairs, said: "We've already seen what can be achieved through the
hugely successful Hadley Learning Community. This commitment to
education in Telford & Wrekin will ensure that all children get
the best possible start to their lives."
The BSF programme was launched by the government in February
2004 with the aim of replacing or rebuilding all secondary schools
across England by 2020.
13 October 2006
Telford & Wrekin have submitted their 'Readiness to
Deliver' assessment to the government and the funding decision will
be announced in December
2006. |
