A Simple Guide to applying for a reception place in 2009/2010

Here is a simple guide as to what you need to do to apply for a reception place in a Telford & Wrekin School.

1) Decide which school or schools you would like your child to go to. The best way is to visit schools and look through copies of their prospectus (available from the schools themselves) which gives information about them. (Please telephone in advance to arrange a visit). School details are given in the information booklet.

2) Once you have decided on your preferences you should fill in the yellow application form or you can apply online at www.telford.gov.uk/admissions. We suggest that you put down two preferences for schools. We will always try to allocate a place at your first preference school but if we can't it is helpful to know what your next preference would be, so that we can consider that.

3) You need to be aware that each school has a set number of places for reception children and cannot admit more than this number. If we have more applications than places available at a school we will have to turn down some requests. The criteria for deciding which children can be allocated places are explained in the information booklet on pages 9 to 13. Distance from the school and whether or not you live within its designated (catchment) area are important. Schools have maps of their own areas or you can contact the admissions team who will be able to tell you which school's area you live in. Maps are included in the booklet but please check with the Admissions team if your address falls near a boundary line.
The fact that you put your child's name down at a school some time ago does not give you any priority over other applicants.

4) Important information to include on the form is whether or not your child is 'looked after', has a statement of special educational need, or is being assessed at the Telford Child Development Centre (TCDC). There are boxes to tick to indicate this.

5) If your child has a brother or sister (sibling) already at the school you want them to go to, it is important you put this on the form. We can only take a sibling connection into account if the sibling will still be at the school in September 2009.

6) Any information you give us on the form will be checked. We can lawfully withdraw an offered school place if the information you have given us on your form is found to be fraudulent or intentionally misleading.

7) You need to send your completed form to us by Friday 19th December 2008.

8) Please remember to send us the form by this closing date even if you have already put your child's name down at a school. If we do not receive your completed application form we cannot include your child in the admissions process and they will not be allocated a school place.

9) We will acknowledge your form once we have received it. Keep this acknowledgment letter safe. If you do not hear from us within 15 working days of sending in the form telephone us on 01952 380903 to let us know.

If you don't receive an acknowledgement letter it means we have not received your form.

10) If you move house during the allocation procedure it is very important that you let the admission team know.

11) We will write to you on the 17th March 2009 to offer your child a school place. The letters will be posted first class on 17th March 2009.

12) Please pick up a copy of the blue Primary School Information booklet on admissions to primary schools from your child's preschool. It has much more detailed information about the admissions process in it and a list of all the primary schools in the borough.

If you have any queries, please ring the Admissions Team on 01952 380903.

13) If you want to apply for a place at a local authority school outside Telford & Wrekin, you should contact the relevant authority directly. Further information is given in the 'Primary School Information ' booklet, on page 30.

This sheet is only a brief summary of the admissions procedures. For a full guide please use the blue 'Primary School Information' booklet which you can collect from preschools, nurseries or primary schools.

If you are unable to collect a booklet from one of these places then please telephone the Admissions Team on 01952 380903 to request a copy.

It is also available via the internet at www.telford.gov.uk/admissions.
