Accessibility Strategy
Under the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001,
(SENDA) Local Authorities (LAs) and schools have three key duties
towards disabled pupils. These are:
-
not to treat disabled pupils less favourably for a reason
related to their disability;
-
to make reasonable adjustments for disabled pupils, so that
they are not at a substantial disadvantage; and
-
to implement an Accessibility Strategy or School Accessibility
Plan to increase access to school for disabled
pupils.
The Children & Young People's Accessibility Strategy sets
out the Council's vision, values and proposal to increase access to
education for pupils with disabilities, in the schools for which
the Council has responsibility.
It is informed by national legislation relating to the SEN
framework, disability discrimination duties and planning
duties.
The strategy aims to:
-
increase the extent to which disabled pupils can participate
in the school curriculum;
-
improve the physical environment of schools to increase the
extent to which disabled pupils can take advantage of education and
associated services; and
-
improve the delivery to disabled pupils of written information
which is provided to pupils who are not disabled, taking account of
their preferred means of
communication. | |
