Play Development Service

Play and Activities Team

The main focus of this Team is to provide play schemes, clubs, activities, junior youth clubs, trips and workshops for children to access in their free time. The key aim is to offer children choice, freedom and places where they can mix with their peers and try out new experiences.

Play Workers - children aged 4.5 - 11 years.

Activity Workers - children aged 10 - 13 years.

Term Time - Play and Activities

Play Workers deliver 15 play schemes each week, which usually start immediately after the end of the school day. The play schemes offer a fun mix of arts, crafts, sports and games.

Included in the 15 schemes are

  • A girls group aimed at encouraging physical activity.
  • A club at the Women's Refuge

"I like the scheme because I like making new friends and I love the different activities." Ben aged 8.

Activity Workers deliver 8 Activity Clubs each week. All the activities organised are chosen through consultation with children. Clubs include:

  • Healthy Cookery
  • Safe Cycling.
  • Arts and Crafts.
  • Martial Arts.
  • Digital Photography.
  • Graffiti Art.
  • Sports Clubs

The Activity Workers also deliver 7 Junior Youth Clubs each week. They are there to support and encourage young people during what can be a difficult time of school transition and puberty.

In 2006/2007 the Play and Activities Team worked with 5,450 individual children and young people with almost 17,000 contacts made.

Holiday Time - Play and Activities

During Summer Holidays an additional 30 staff are employed (mainly students) in order to offer 88 Play Sessions per week, reaching children at 23 different sites across Telford. During every half term Play Workers offer 6 Play Schemes per week, either on site or organised trips.

Every half term and throughout the Summer the Activity Workers deliver 16 weekly Activity Sessions. A number of trips are also offered, including:

  • Adventure activities at The Old Vicarage.
  • Overnight Camps at The Long Mynd.
  • Cinema.
  • Ice Skating.
  • Monkey Magic.
  • Cariba Creek
