Course intended for:- Staff in all types
of settings, childminders, out-of-school clubs, pre-schools,
nurseries and schools.
Course Type: This is introductory training for
practitioners in all types of setting - private, voluntary and
maintained, including childminders.
Description:
This session will consider the issues surrounding disability
relating to both adults and children. Participants will be able to
examine stereotypes and assumptions made, and their own attitudes
and prejudices concerning disability.
Participants will explore the individual and social models of
disability, visible and invisible disabilities, the language of
disability and the real meaning of 'inclusion' in early years
settings. This course will enable practitioners to ask the right
questions and relate to both adults and children with disabilities
to ensure that they provide appropriately for individual
needs.
This session will be a helpful introduction prior to attendance on
the SEN Core training module which will focus on the Code of
practice for the identification and Assessment of Special
Educational Needs and practical strategies for providing for
children's educational needs
Note: Certificates will only be provided after you have
attended all three sessions.
Expected outcomes: By the end of this session
participants will be able to:
- Describe the individual and social models of disability.
- Explain the differences between polices of segregation,
integration and inclusion.
- Discuss the power of language that relates to disability and
consider appropriate language to use.
- Consider how visible and invisible disabilities are perceived
by society.
- Explore where prejudices relating to disability come from and
how such prejudices can be overcome.
