| If you fancy a stroll through the countryside surrounded
by woodland and wildlife and relics of the area's industrial
heritage, there is no better place than Granville Country
Park. | |
 |
Telford may have been the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution
but it is also the 'Forest City' - a borough designed to
incorporate trees, ancient woodland, grassland, wildlife areas and
numerous plantations.
The Industrial Revolution had a dramatic impact on the Telford
& Wrekin landscape, and the eventual decline of the area's many
mining companies left numerous pit mound spoil heaps around the
town.
Examples of these pit mounds, which have since been filled in and
planted with trees and woodland, can be seen at Granville Country
Park - a local nature reserve owned by Telford & Wrekin Council
and managed by the authority's Environmental Maintenance team and
Shropshire Wildlife Trust, with the help of the Friends of
Granville Country Park.
Granville is one of the largest and most wildlife diverse areas in
Telford, with its pit mounds, canal, woodland and relics of
industrial activity.
Hidden among the bird-filled woodland are treasures such as an old
engine house and furnace.
Paths, which have recently been resurfaced, and bridleways, wind
their way around the park, offering visitors a pleasant stroll
through a landscape transformed from grim and uninviting industry
to green and open countryside.
Directions: Turn onto Granville Road, signed to
Granville Country Park, off the Granville roundabout between
Donnington Wood Way and Redhill Way - about two miles north0east of
Telford Town Centre. Follow the surfaced road for quarter of a mile
to the car park. | |
