Conservation grants and advice |
| One conservation grant scheme currently operates in the
central core of Wellington Conservation
Area. | |
Over a number of years, historic areas can suffer from a
physical erosion of their character with an associated loss of
commercial or residential activity.
Grants are sometimes available for a limited period of time to
provide an incentive for property owners to carry out sympathetic
improvements to their properties. Often, the additional costs of
such work to historic buildings (to pay for specialist materials,
craftsmanship etc) means the project can become financially
unviable. The grants are designed to compensate owners for
renovating to a higher conservation standard in comparison with a
more basic specification. Hence all work will need to adopt the
highest standards of materials, craftsmanship and design.
There is currently one grant scheme operating in the
central part of Wellington Conservation Area. The Townscape
Heritage Initiative (THI) is a grant-giving programme for the
repair and restoration of historic buildings.
The Wellington THI is made up of a £900,000 "common pot" available
to projects in the central part of Wellington Conservation Area for
a five year period until October 2011. The programme will be
managed by Telford & Wrekin Council on behalf of Wellington
Partnership. Substantial contributions to the "common pot" have
been made by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Advantage West Midlands
(AWM).
Grants are available for 3 different categories of work
- Building repairs - up to 60% of
the total cost of the scheduled works
- Reinstatement of architectural
features - up to 85% of the total cost of the scheduled
work
- Re-use of vacant floor-space -
each case will be considered on its merits.
Funding will be allocated to eligible
projects on an application and assessment process. If you think you
have a project within the eligible area that meets the criteria,
please arrange to meet with Stella Jamieson, the Wellington
THI project officer on 01952 384190. If appropriate, you
will then be provided with an application pack.
Grant applications for works which are already underway or
completed will not be eligible for consideration. Relevant planning
and conservation consents will have to be in place before
applications can be processed.
A leaflet is available which provides
a summary of what the THI involves (including a plan showing the
eligible area).

Urban Form & Conservation
Over the last three years, the Council
has been offering grants in the Madeley part of the Severn Gorge
Conservation Area. The Madeley Heritage Economic Regeneration
Scheme (HERS) project is jointly funded by Telford and Wrekin
Council, English Heritage and Madeley Parish Council. The Council
manages the project on behalf of the funding partnership. The
deadline for applications has now closed and all grant money has
been allocated. The scheme finished at the end of March
2007. | |
