Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Designing better places

Creating new places to live, work and socialise is the most important design task faced by the Local Planning Authority
If these places are going to be appreciated and well used, they must be safe, comfortable, varied and attractive. They also need to be locally distinctive, and offer variety, choice and fun.

Good design is concerned with all the practical aspects of building design; soundness of construction, energy conservation, drainage, access, car parking, daylight and over-shadowing for instance, as well as quality of appearance. But well designed buildings can also enrich our surroundings and cultural life.

Good design should be the aim of all involved in the planning process, but it is primarily the responsibility of designers and their clients.

The Council's Urban Form & Conservation Team works to promote good design through the preparation of planning briefs, design guidance, development frameworks, and design and historic environment policies, as well as having an integral role more strategically in the development of the Local Development Framework and the Central Telford Area Action Plan.

It also has a leading role in many high profile development projects, where we frequently work in partnership with landowners, public agencies, developers and community organisations. A prime example is the work on a number of strategic sites in which English Partnerships is involved. These include the only Millennium Community in the Midlands, a major urban extension, an urban village and Town Centre regeneration.
