Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Historic parks and gardens

Historic Parks and gardens are protected by local plan policies

Historic parks and gardens can greatly contribute towards the richness of an area and form an important part of our inheritance.

To identify sites that are of particular historic importance, English Heritage maintains a register of parks and gardens. The main purpose of the register is to help ensure that their features or qualities are safeguarded during ongoing management or if any changes are considered.

Whilst the register brings no additional statutory controls, local authorities are required to make provision for protection of these sites in their policies and if considering any development proposals that affects them. Policy HE24 in the Wrekin Local Plan provides the safeguard for such registered sites.

There are currently 2 sites that fall wholly within the Borough, namely Chetwynd Park, near Newport and Orleton Hall, to the west of Wellington. Part of the Lilleshall Hall site also falls within the Borough.
