Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Joint structure plan

The Shropshire County Council and Telford & Wrekin Council Joint Structure Plan has been adopted by both authorities. This development Plan forms the basis for land use decisions affecting this area. It essentially sets out the strategic planning framework for the two authorities until 2011, although it will be replaced by the emerging Local Development Framework.

Copies of the adopted plan are available for inspection at the Shirehall Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury and Darby House, Lawn Central, Telford. Copies are also available for inspection in public libraries

The Structure Plan is a wide ranging document which

  • Establishes the general amount and location of new development.
  • Shows how development relates to transport and other services.
  • Indicates how a balance will be struck between development and the conservation of the countryside, wildlife and important open space.
  • Provides the basis for detailed local planning and coordination of services.
  • Shows how national and regional policy will be made to work in the area.

The Strategy

Continued growth within a sustainable framework is seen as the way forward for Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Council. The main themes are to:

  • Conserve resources and the environment by reducing reliance on car travel and length of journey, fostering bio-diversity and the conservation of natural resources.
  • Improve the quality of life by: protecting and improving the natural and cultural assets of the area; improve employment prospects; and tackle levels of deprivation.
  • Achieve a sustainable environment by careful location of development; improve access and maximize use of previously used land and existing infrastructure.
  • Foster a prosperous economy, support for the rural economy and encourage inward investment.
