| Redevelopment of Madeley shopping centre, including new
Tesco store. | |
|
Madeley is one of the District Centres, in the south of
the Borough. It is located within the World Heritage Site. The
existing shopping centre was completed by the early 1970's. It was
pedestrianised with two squares each faced on three sides by shops.
Servicing was to the rear together with car parking.
Major changes to the Centre are now taking place.
The proposal involves a mixed use scheme, based upon the
demolition of much of the existing centre and the construction of a
new medium sized Tesco supermarket, new street, and retaining the
library, open market, Anstice Memorial Institute and four existing
shops.
The key elements of the scheme are
- A new Tesco store (gross floor area 47,150 sq.ft (a
medium sized store). It is of a predominantly glazed
construction.
- 330 parking spaces ( which will also serve the centre in the
same way that the existing parking serves the centre). It will
include dedicated spaces for disabled drivers and parents with
young children.
- Fifteen new retail units (additional to the new Tesco store and
as replacement to existing shops) Total 23,876 sq.ft
- Retention of four existing shop units (including the post
office)
- Retention of the Anstice Memorial Institute, built in
1869 which claims to be one of the first working men's clubs in
England.
- Sixteen new residential new units located on two floors above
one row of new shops.
- New link road approximately two hundred metres long between the
top of Madeley High Street and Park Avenue. It will be two way for
all traffic but is designed to be a safe and attractive space for
pedestrians.
- The existing Madeley High Street and Court Street will remain
as one way (in the same direction as existing)
- The old curved ramp and deck access to and around the library
will be removed and replaced with a new lift and stairway in
Russell Square fixed to the outside of the library building. This
will re-open the views of the war memorial and park to the
north.
- enhanced landscaping, including new planting on the Park avenue
roundabout, rear service yards and car parks.
- enhanced Russell
Square
