Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Scheduled ancient monuments

Scheduled Ancient Monuments are identified by English Heritage
Iron bridge is our most famous scheduled ancient monument

Scheduling is the means by which nationally important sites and monuments are given legal protection. English Heritage takes the lead in identifying sites to be included on the schedule.

It is the only legal protection specifically for archaeological sites

There are currently 28 ancient monuments on the schedule, within the Borough.

A monument that has been scheduled is protected against disturbance or unlicensed metal detecting. Consent has to be sought from English Heritage if you wish to carry out any work that might affect a monument above or below ground.

In the first instance, we should be able to provide information on the location and extent of these sites. Please contact the our Conservation officer on 01952 384189 or email Urban Form & Conservation

We have an agreement with Shropshire County Council to provide archaeological advice for the Borough. You can contact 01743 252575 or email Mike Watson
