A

Aerosols
Aerosol cans can be recycled on the kerbside collection scheme, or in any of the can banks.

Aluminium
Aluminium foil and cans can be recycled on the kerbside scheme and in any of the can banks. Larger pieces such as window frames can be recycled at the CRC sites in the scrap metal skips. Fact Recycling an aluminium can uses only 5% of the energy needed to make one from raw materials.

Asbestos
Asbestos is a hazardous material if not handled correctly. If disposing of asbestos please look at our guidance notes. We only accept asbestos at Granville CRC.

B

Batteries (Car) - Car batteries are collected for recycling at all of our CRC's.

Batteries (Household) -

  • Re-use Use rechargeable batteries, they can be reused thousands of times and will save you money.
  • Recycle Household batteries can be recycled at our CRC's.

Bedding -

  • Reuse Good quality, clean bedding can be donated to charity shops. Cut up old bedding for use as rags or dust sheets.
  • Recycle Bedding can be recycled on the kerbside scheme or in any of the textile banks.
Bikes -

  • Reuse Try selling them through the local press or on the internet.
  • Recycle Put them in the scrap metal skip in any of the CRC's.
Books -

  • Reduce Borrow books from the library.
  • Reuse Donate your old books to a charity shop or use the book bank in the Morrisons car park in Wellington.

Bulk Collection Service - The council will collect certain bulky household items from residents at a cost of £15 for 6 items. Phone 01952 384384 to arrange a collection. Why not consider using the local furniture recycling scheme.

C

Cans - Put out steel and aluminium cans for the kerbside collection or take to the can banks.

Cardboard
Cardboard can be recycled on the kerbside collection scheme or at any of the CRC's.

Carpet - Use as a weed suppresser in the garden. Cut up for use in the car.

Charity Shops - Takes clothes, shoes, toys etc

Christmas Cards - Take to Tesco or WH Smiths for recycling in January or recycle them as cardboard.

Clothing -

Community Recycling Centres (CRC's) - We run 4 sites across the borough, please separate your material before you visit.

Community Repaint - Paint recycling scheme where people donate their left over paints which can be distributed amongst charities and community groups.

Composting - Place your green garden waste in the green bin or home composter.

Computers - Contact Puma computers on 01952 216741.

Cookers - Trade in at your local supplier or take to the scrap metal skips at the CRC's.

D

Dry Recyclables - this includes metals, glass bottles and jars , paper, cardboard, textiles and aerosol cans. All these items can be placed in your red kerbside box for recycling.


E

Egg Boxes
- Give them to farms or market traders for reuse

Envelopes - Stick a label over the old address and reuse them

F

Film Cases - Take black camera film cases back to Boots for recycling.

Fluorescent Tubes - Take them to the CRC's for Recycling.

Fridges and Freezers - To have the CFC's removed and metal recycled take to the CRC's or phone 01952 384384 for a bulky waste collection.

Furniture -


G

Garden Waste - Put in your green bin for collection, take to any of the CRC's for composting or purchase a reduced price home compost bin.

Gas Bottles - Return them to the supplier (the details should be on the bottle) or take them to one of the CRC's.

Glass - Wash glass bottles and jars and recycle them on the kerbside collection scheme or separate them into colours and take them to the bottle banks. Please take your empty boxes and bags home. Please don't put drinking glasses, window glass, light bulbs or crockery into the bottle bank.

Glasses - Take them to an opticians for re-use in developing counties.

Home Composting
- an excellent way to dispose of food waste, paper and cardboard.

J

Junk Mail -


Kerbside Collection - Collects fortnightly across the Borough. You can put out newspapers/magazines, junk mail, drinks and washed food cans, textiles, aluminium foil, glass and cardboard. Phone 01952 384384 for further details.

L

Leaves - You can compost leaves.

Lightbulbs - Buy energy efficient lightbulbs to save you money. They last longer and cost you less in electricity.

M

Magazines - Put in paper banks or out for Kerbside collection.

Medicine - take back to your chemist.

Milkman - Use your local milkman this will save on plastic bottle waste. Fact A glass bottle on average lasts for 24 journeys and can be recycled when they break.

Mobile Phones - Trade your phone in if you buy a new one. Take to Oxfam or Help the Aged stores for recycling or post to Oxfam Bring Bring Scheme, Freepost LON16281, London, W5 5BR, Phone: 0870 7520999. (please remove the sim cards).

Motor Oil - Take to the oil banks at any of the CRC's. Never pour down the drains.

N

Nappies - Use real nappies to reduce the amount of waste you produce. Fact if you have 1 child in nappies more than 50% of your waste could be disposable nappies.

O

Office Paper - Look at the business page for help to recycle office paper.

P

Packaging - Try to avoid over packaged items, buy in bulk for a better price and less packaging.

Paper - Take newspapers, magazines and junk mail to paper banks or out for kerbside collection. Please no office paper or shredded paper.

Plastic Bags - Take to Tesco for recycling, reuse where possible.

Plastics - You can recycle your plastic bottles at all CRC's. Unfortunately our reprocessors do not use other types of plastic so we cannot accept plastic cartons.

Plastic and Polystyrene Cups - for recycling from vending machines contact Save-a-Cup 01494 510167 or Klix 01785 815551.

Q

Quality
Recycled products are being continually improved and are often the same cost as non-recycled products. So consider buying recycled and close the loop.

R

Refuse Collection - Contact 01952 384384 for enquiries about your wheelie bin.

S

Scrap Metal - Take to the CRC's.

Shoes - There are shoe banks at Sainsburys, Asda, Donnington, and all CRC's or take to a charity shop. Please remember to tie shoe laces together or attach with a rubber band.

Stamps and Coins - Some charities, like guide dogs for the blind and Oxfam, collect these.

Spectacles - See glasses.

T

Timber - Recycle your wood waste at Granville, Halesfield and Ketley CRC's.

Tools - 'Tools for Self Reliance 01588 640550 send craft tools to poor countries.

Tyres - Tyres can be recycled at Granville, Halesfield and Ketley CRC's.

U

Using the recycling facilities - We currently have a 35% recycling rate thank you to everyone who helped us to achieve this by recycling their rubbish. We want to increase this amount so please keep up the good work and remember to use the kerbside collections, CRC's and Bring Banks.

V

Vehicles - Take worn out vehicles to the scrap yard, up to 86% of them can be recycled. If you see an abandoned vehicle contact 01952 384384.

W

Washing Machines - remove the window to use as a bowl. Take to the scrap metal skips at the CRC's.

X

Xmas Trees - Recycle your Christmas trees in your green bin or at any of the CRC's.

Y

Yellow Pages - at present Yellow Pages are not collected at kerbside

Z

Zero Waste - This is what we should be striving to achieve as many other Countries are.
