Waste Minimisation

Why is Waste Minimisation important?
Waste hierarchy

We would like to divert as much waste from being buried in the ground as possible. "Landfilling" rubbish, as this process is known, creates methane gas which contributes to global warming. Considering the fact there is now in excess of 60 million people in the UK, taking care of our environment has never been more important!

The Rubbish and Recycling Team encourages people to think about the "Waste Hierarchy", where different stages in the waste management process are placed in an order of importance. The most important thing is to minimise what you buy in the first instance as this reduces the need to reuse materials, recycle or ultimately have to bury any leftover materials. Reusable bags are a great example of waste reduction, Choose to Reuse wherever possible.

The Real Nappy Campaign

Using real nappies helps to save money, reduces the waste we produce and helps to protect the worlds natural resources. The council offers cash back and a free trial of a nappy laundry service to encourage residents to use real nappies

Home Composting

We are working with the Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP) to provide residents with a range of home composting bins at a reduced cost.

Chairs & Spares

Telford & Wrekin Council is proud to support this furniture recycling project that aims to pass on reusable furniture to people at low prices. This scheme presently recycles all types of furniture and is expanding to include electrical items.
