Preserving the Borough's Natural Environment.

Despite being the largest urban area in Shropshire the town of Telford has a rich, diverse natural environment. This includes four Local Nature Reserves, eight Sites of Special Scientific Interest and numerous County Wildlife Sites.

Thirty eight percent of the urban area of Telford is open space and designated as Green Network. It is important to ensure that key areas of open space are protected and enhanced to fulfil their maximum potential to contribute to sustainable and healthy communities.

To help ensure the protection, enhancement and wise use of the natural environment, Telford & Wrekin council:

  • Takes an environmentally sensitive approach to land management whenever possible.
  • Welcomes guidance from external sources (e.g. Natural England, Shropshire Wildlife Trust, etc.
  • Gives significant weight and regard to biodiversity and natural environment issues in the consideration of planning applications.
  • Works in partnership with others to promote biodiversity and the natural environment in the Borough and beyond (e.g. Shropshire Biodiversity Partnership and the production of a common Local Biodiversity Action Plan).
