Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Sustainable Borough

How the council helps the Borough reduce it's environmental impact.

Underlining the council's commitment to sustainable development is the aim to create thriving, vibrant, sustainable communities which will improve everyone's quality of life. To make this a reality everyone involved in the community should have the opportunity to help make it a place where people want to live and work now and in the future. By forming partnerships with non government organisations, businesses, and community groups, the council encourages them, and helps them to encourage others, to become more sustainable.

Wellington Local Agenda 21 Group

This voluntary community group has been promoting sustainable development in Wellington since May 2000. Supported by the council, the group are responsible for a range of successful projects and initiatives which aim to address global and local environmental, social and economic issues. You can find details of all the group's projects and events on their website.

Environment Partnership

A number of organisations involved in the protection, enhancement and wise use of the local and global environment have come together to form an Environment Partnership.

Building Sustainable Communities

New commercial and residential developments are essential to the prosperity and growth of the borough. To create new sustainable communities, the partnerships that design and build these developments are strongly encouraged to follow the principles of sustainable development and environmentally sustainable construction. This may include attainment of environmental accreditation e.g. BREEAM, designing for biodiversity, incorporating Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS), sustainable construction practices, facilitating waste minimisation and recycling, minimising car use, etc.

Examples of recent developments incorporating such aspects can be found at East Ketley, Lawley and Redhill.
