What if I care for a friend or relative? |
| A carer is someone of any age who looks after a relative
or friend who cannot manage without help because of age, disability
or long term health needs, including mental illness or substance
misuse. | |
|
We
recognise that carers make a big difference to the lives of many
members of our community.
If a carer asks social services, we have to assess whether there is
any help or support which they themselves need as a carer. This is
quite separate from the needs of the person they are caring for.
You can ask for a Carer's Assessment through a social worker, or
through one of the offices.
Alternatively, you could ask the carers contact
centre which is funded by the council to help in getting an
assessment of your needs as a carer. They also help by providing
information and support, and by linking carers to other people and
organisations that can offer specialist help. They also send out a
newsletter, giving local and national information which carers may
find useful.
