Children in Care benefit from a range of support including foster care, residential care and initiatives to improve their attainment at school, health, well being and life chances.

Anyone can apply to be a foster carer…you can be single, married or divorced, gay or straight, have children yourself or not. People from all walks of life and backgrounds make excellent foster carers. Everyone brings with them something a little bit different, which adds to their ability to foster a child or young person and give them a loving home.

There are various ways in which you can look after children and young people, one such scheme is supportive lodgings for youngsters aged 16+, where the young person lives independently, but has a room in your home. You can be a fulltime foster carer or offer respite care, where you care for a child for a few days during the holidays or occasional weekends.

If you want to become a foster carer you will be given full training and undergo an assessment to make sure you have what it takes to care for children separated from their own families. Foster carers now have the opportunity to study for National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), as well as receiving ongoing support and guidance from their own social worker.

There are good financial benefits for being a foster carer in Telford and Wrekin. Here, we have set fees for foster carers (pay depends on the age of the child), as well as generous allowances and extra financial help at birthdays and Christmas.

The other rewards are maybe more significant and important to a foster carer. Just seeing a child grow into a strong adult with good life chances and improved self-esteem is the power that drives you to be, or remain a carer.
