Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Social care money issues

Will there be a charge?
The council has policies which set out how much you will pay towards the cost of a residential or nursing home bed or your contribution towards the care you receive at home.

It all depends upon how much money you have in savings or receive in benefits or other income. A full financial assessment will be carried out in each case. Depending on the outcome of this, you might be liable to pay the full cost, make a contribution or pay nothing at all.

A copy of the policies/leaflets can be provided by your social worker and can be explained to you by a specialist from the Social Care Finance Team - phone 01952 383820. You can also download a copy from the link on the right.

Finance policies

  • Charging policy for non residential community care services for adults.
  • Charging policy for care homes.
  • Community care charging policy information needed by the finance officer.
  • Community care charging non residential services information sheet.
  • Fairer charging (for housing support).

Help with your benefits
As part of the financial assessment carried out to work out the amount you will have to pay towards the cost of your care, you will receive a full welfare benefits check. The staff member will identify any benefits to which you may be entitled and will obtain your written permission to make a referral to the local Department of Work and Pensions with whom we have a close working relationship. They will arrange for someone to visit you at home to help with the completion of any forms and to take any follow up action.

Should you prefer to obtain welfare rights advice from an independent source you will be given details of all the local voluntary agencies such as Age Concern, DIAL Shropshire and the Citizens Advice Bureau who will be able to help.

The government offices listed below may also be able to help.

How you pay for homecare services

You are invoiced by our finance clerks from the Older People and Disability Business unit;

  • The invoice is raised monthly and we only send out the invoice once you have been assessed and your contribution towards the care has been worked out. Your contribution all depends on your financial situation
  • The invoice tells you how much care has been provided and a telephone number of the finance clerks should you wish to query the invoice.
  • The invoices are raised during the same period that we receive the invoices from the home care provider.
  • Invoices are raised a month in arrears.

You can pay the invoice by cheque, cash or by credit or debit card. You can call at the payments office in Civic Offices or any post office and pay by cash, cheque or postal order or you can use a debit or credit card if you prefer. Cheques should be made payable to Telford & Wrekin Council.

You can also send your cheque direct to Civic Offices or Darby House or you can phone 01952 383806 to pay over the phone. Alternatively you can ask for a payment card and pay your bills by installments.
