Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Affordable housing

Telford & Wrekin Council works with a range of partners to help to provide affordable housing locally.

Meeting local housing needs

Local research shows that there is a significant shortage of affordable housing in Telford and Wrekin.

The council is working to increase the supply of affordable homes in the borough. As part of this it:

  • supports local housing associations to develop new homes, including providing financial assistance;
  • works with the Housing Corporation on funding for new developments;
  • works with local private landlords;
  • works with private developers (see below)

Working with private developers to provide affordable housing

The council works with private developers to provide affordable housing as part of new developments. The council's policies on the provision of affordable housing are set out in the current Wrekin Local Plan.

When working with developers the council will look to achieve housing that:

  • is affordable for local people, in terms of its cost in relation to local income levels;
  • is of a size and type that meets the needs of local people;
  • is built to good development standards, including physical accessibility, energy efficiency and secure design;
  • is well integrated with other forms of housing in developments;
  • will remain as affordable in the long term.
The council welcomes the opportunity to have pre-application discussions with developers on their potential sites.
