| Council Tax replaced the old Community Charge (or Poll
Tax) system on 1st April 1993. Together with Business Rates, income
from services and central government grants, it provides the money
spent on local services.
These services include: schools, libraries, refuse
collection, social services, the police and fire authorities.
Every household has a liability for Council Tax. The amount each
household in Telford & Wrekin pays is dependant on:
- the value of the property,
- which parish or town council is responsible for the area that
you live in,
- whether the property is occupied or unoccupied, and
- whether any of the residents should be ignored for Council Tax
purposes.
Each property is placed in a band according to
its value, the Council Tax bandings for 2008/09 can be found
here.
The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) is responsible for allocating a
Council Tax Band to each domestic property. You can find out more
about property valuations and check any property banding via their
website www.voa.gov.uk
If you disagree with the banding allocated to your property, you
can find the details of how to appeal
here.
The Council Tax bill is made up of two parts, 50% property and 50%
person. It is calculated based on two people, aged 18 or over,
living in the property. If only one person lives in the property
then the person part is reduced by 25%, this is known as
Single Person Discount.(click link for application

We will soon be reviewing Single Person Discount,
