Borough of Telford & Wrekin

What help is available if I am homeless?

Everyone has the right to advice and assistance to prevent them becoming homeless, or to help them find somewhere else to live.
What will happen?
When we see you, we will ask you some simple questions about your personal circumstances. The information you give us will help us to find the best way to help you, and we will do our best to work with you to prevent you from becoming homeless.

There are a number of homeless prevention schemes which have proved to be very successful - we will discuss them with you when you call.

What if we cannot prevent you from becoming homeless?
If we are unable to prevent you from becoming homeless and you are eligible for assistance, we will take a homeless application from you and will consider what advice and assistance we need to offer to you.

What if I am not eligible for assistance?
If you are not eligible for assistance, we may be able to provide you with details of other agencies who can advise you.

What if I am homeless and in priority need?
If you are homeless and in priority need, we must provide you with temporary accommodation until you are permanently rehoused.

What type of temporary accommodation will I get?
In Telford and Wrekin, temporary accommodation is generally provided in hostels or houses which the council have leased. When we cannot find any other temporary accommodation, we may sometimes have to place you in bed & breakfast accommodation for a short time.

What if I am in priority need but have become intentionally homeless?
If you are in priority need but you have become homeless intentionally, we must provide you with temporary accommodation for a short period of time only. During this time, we will work with you to try and help you find somewhere else to live.

What if I am homeless but not in priority need?
If you are homeless but not in priority need, we must provide you with advice and assistance to help you find somewhere to live. We will not provide you with temporary accommodation.

What if the council decides I am not homeless?
If we decide that you are not homeless, you can still speak to our Housing Options Service to find out what housing options are available to you.

How long does a homeless application take?
If you make a homeless application, we will send you a letter within 33 days whenever possible (60 days in exceptional circumstances) explaining how we can help you.
