Advice for Private Tenants |
| Advice for people who live in privately rented property
and want to move to another privately rented
property. | |
What should I do if I would like to move?
If you currently live in a privately rented property and want to
move to another privately rented property, please follow the link
to the 'Renting from a Private Landlord' page. You can contact the
Housing Options Team for further advice and assistance on the
issues you need to consider before accepting a private
tenancy.
What should I do if my landlord is threatening to evict
me?
If you are a private tenant, you may find that your landlord
chooses to evict you for a number of reasons, including:
- if you are behind with your rent
- if you are breaching other clauses in your tenancy
agreement
- if your landlord wishes to sell the property.
If you are threatened
with eviction, you need to act quickly. Our
Housing Options Team can assist you with confidential advice and
can liaise with your landlord to try to prevent the eviction.
If your landlord takes legal action to evict you from the property,
the team can advise and represent you through the legal
process.
The longer you wait to get advice, the harder it will become to
keep you in your home and if your landlord asks the Court to make
you leave, you may have to pay Court costs as well.
What should I do if my property needs repairing or
adapting?
If you are a private tenant and your property needs repairing or
adapting, our Housing Quality & Renewal Team may be able to
assist you. If you require further information, please follow the
link to the 'Private Housing' page or contact the team on 01952
381874.
If you live in a privately rented property and you need the
property adapted to meet your needs, you can find out more
information on what assistance is available to you by following the
link to the 'Adapting Homes'
page. | |
