Whilst there are a few major landowners, notably
Ironbridge Gorge Museums, the Borough of Telford & Wrekin and
Severn Gorge Countryside Trust, there are also a large number of
individual land and property owners.
In addition, there are numerous organisations with statutory or
other responsibilities within the World Heritage Site, including
English Heritage, the Environment Agency and the Department for
Culture, Media and Sport.
In order to ensure the protection and promotion of the World
Heritage Site as an area of outstanding universal significance; a
living and working community and a popular visitor attraction, it
is important that these many and diverse organisations and
interests work together. To enable this, the principal
organisations and interests meet together as the Ironbridge Gorge
World Heritage Site Strategy Group, which comprises the following
member organisations:-
Borough of Telford & Wrekin
Bridgnorth District Council
Countryside Agency
Department for Culture, Media and Sport
English Heritage
Environment Agency
ICOMOS UK
Ironbridge Chamber of Trade
Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust
Madeley Parish Council
Severn Gorge Countryside Trust
Shropshire County Council
The Green Wood Centre
The Gorge Parish Council
The Strategy Group meets 3 times a year to discuss and consider
issues of strategic significance affecting the World Heritage
Site.
In 2001, the Strategy Group launched the Management Plan for the
Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site which identified the key
issues facing the area and a programme of action for the next
decade.
Telford & Wrekin Council employs a Co-ordinator for the
Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, whose role is to work with
the various organisations listed above and to act as a "champion"
for the World Heritage Site within the Council and the wider
community. To contact the Co-ordinator, please email
jonathan.lloyd@telford.gov.uk.
