Visiting the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site

The Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site is situated on the southern boundary of Telford approximately midway between Wolverhampton and Shrewsbury.

Coalbrookale

Within the World Heritage Site, an area of about six square miles, are ten museums, the Iron Bridge itself together with numerous other historic buildings and structures, all connected by a network of roads, footpaths and cycleways and set in an attractive, wooded river valley.

How to travel here:

By car
Leave the M54 at Junction 4 (from Birmingham) or Junction 6 (from Shrewsbury).

  • Follow the brown signs to the Ironbridge Gorge
  • As you approach the World Heritage Site, visitors are directed to three Museum "clusters", namely, Coalbrookdale Museums; Ironbridge Museums or Blists Hill Museums.

Follow signs to Coalbrookdale Museums for:

  • Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron
  • Enginuity
  • Darby Houses
  • Coalbrookdale Watercourses

Follow signs to Blists Hill Museums for:-

  • Blists Hill Victorian Town
  • Coalport China Museum
  • The Tar Tunnel

Follow signs to Ironbridge Museums for:-

  • The Iron Bridge and Tollhouse
  • Jackfield Tile Museum
  • Broseley Pipeworks
  • The Museum of the Gorge
  • Ironbridge town

Coalport

Car parking
For visitors to the Museum of the Gorge, the Iron Bridge and Tollhouse, there are local authority pay and display car parks in close proximity. For visitors to other museum sites, free car parking is available.

By train
Telford Central railway station is approximately 5 miles (8 km) north of Ironbridge. For rail information call 08457 484 950 or visit the Trainline website.

By bus

The main bus operator within the Borough of Telford & Wrekin is Arriva.

Gorge Connect
Between April and October, the Gorge Connect bus service runs throughout the World Heritage Site linking the main museum sites and attractions.

Walking and cycling in the World Heritage Site
There is a well-signposted network of attractive footpaths and cycleways throughout the World Heritage Site, together with cycle parking areas in strategic locations.

National Cycle Route 45, the Mercian Way, passes directly through the Gorge, running alongside the River Severn and over the Iron Bridge on its journey from Salisbury to Chester.

National Cycle Route 55 terminates in Coalport and provides an excellent route from Telford along the Silkin Way.
