Celebration Day.
Young people across Telford and Wrekin have celebrated the National
Year of Reading with the announcement of Telford's first ever
Award. The Announcement took place as part of a day of celebrations
at the Place, Oakengates on Wednesday 16th July 2008. 3500 votes
were cast and the event was funded by Telford's Culture Zone.
Winners:
Key stage 1: Francesca Simon's 'Horrid Henry's Stinkbomb'.
Keystage 2: J.K Rowling's 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's
Stone.
Keystage 3: Malorie Blackman's 'Noughts and
Crosses'
The celebration day saw the choir and orchestra from Coalbrookdale
& Ironbridge school perform. Children from Lilleshall Primary
read out their alien poems inspired by one of the short-listed
books, and Dothill Juniors school displayed alternative book
covers.
One of the highlights for the children was hearing feedback from
the winning authors.
Francesca Simon said:
"I'm really pleased to have won this award especially as it was
voted on by children, my huge thanks to all Telford readers, who I
hope, like Henry will read with a flash light, under covers after
lights out!"
JK Rowling sent a special letter thanking them all for the award
which said:
"The award is very special because it has been created by the
readers themselves. I can wish nothing better for you all than to
continue to read and to think about what you've read, and to argue
with other people about it"
Paul Cookson announced the key stage 1 and 2 winners and gave a
wonderful performance of his interactive poetry.
The announcement of the key stage 3 award was made by authors
Steve Skidmore and Steve Barlow who gave a highly entertaining and
thought-provoking message of encouragement to young people to keep
reading and writing.
The keystage 3 winner, Malorie Blackman sent a message which
said:
"I am thrilled to be the winner of the first ever award and I hope
that Telford's Book Awards go from strength to strength".
Councillor Denis Allen, Cabinet Member for Community Services
said:
"The Telford Book Award has proved a massive success with children
from across the Authority voting for their favourite authors. This
award is unique because the children themselves have set up the
awards. I hope that the announcement ceremony and feed back from
the authors will encourage children to keep reading, visit their
library and join this summer's 'Team Read' challenge.
