BBC Health
Features current health stories, guides by subject, 'Ask a Doctor' inquiry feature, a searchable conditions database, and message boards.

Cancerbackup
Provides information, advice and support, and resources for all those affected by cancer. Covers all types of cancer, and includes answers to questions asked by people contacting
Cancerbackup.

DIPEx
Personal experiences of health and illness in audio, video or written form, covering over 100 different conditions. It is recommended that you have a broadband connection and requires Windows Media Player 9 or later.

Food Standards Agency
The independent food safety watchdog. Information on a variety of topics including nutrition, labelling and packaging, and GM foods.

Lab Tests Online UK
Easy to understand information about medical tests. Also contains information about the diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of conditions and diseases.

National Library for Health
Mainly aimed at healthcare staff but there is a useful 'Hitting the Headlines' section which looks at the research behind national news reports.

Patient UK
Provides excellent printable leaflets on health and disease, medicines and tests (some translated into other languages and some available as audio files). Also has links to national support and self-help groups. Contains a directory of reviewed health and illness related websites, mainly from the UK.

NHS services

HealthSpace
An NHS initiative which offers a secure place on the Internet to store all your personal health information. It also links to Choose & Book so that you can make your first outpatient appointment at a time, date and place to suit you.

NHS Direct
A nurse-led service run by the NHS for patients with questions about diagnosis and treatment of common symptoms. The website provides a health encyclopaedia, self-help advice based on common symptoms, and answers to common health questions. Health information is available in 12 different languages.

NHS Choices
Provides information on local NHS services along with healthy living advice in the form of leaflets, audio and video. Patients can comment on their treatment, and users can see and compare hospital ratings. Facility to 'choose and book' appointments online.

Mental health

BBC Headroom
A long term campaign to encourage everyone to look after their mental wellbeing. Provides tools to deal with everyday stresses and strains, as well as providing a safe place to start finding answers to more complex problems.

BBC Mental Health
A guide to the mental health issues that can affect us all. Includes information on emotional health, disorders and conditions, supporting and caring, and treatments.

Books on Prescription
Service offered by Telford & Wrekin libraries, providing books for loan to help with common mental health difficulties. The titles have been recommended by health professionals, and referral can be from a GP or self-referral. Includes information about the scheme and a list of titles.

Living Life to the Full
An free online life skills course using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for use by health care practitioners and members of the public. The modules cover a range of topics including anxiety management and healthy living.

Mental Health Foundation
UK charity that provides information for anyone affected by mental health problems. Includes a series of useful booklets on a range of topics, free to download.

Mental Health Helpline
Details of a freephone, confidential listening and support service for Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin. Includes an online agency database of local and national organisations.

Mind (National Association for Mental Health)
The leading mental health charity in England and Wales, offering advice and support. Information about their helpline, local and other networks, campaigns and publications. Includes a series of free useful leaflets and factsheets on a wide range of topics, which have details of useful organisations.

MoodGYM
A free self help programme to teach cognitive behaviour therapy skills to people vulnerable to depression and anxiety.

Samaritans
Charity which provides confidential non-judgemental emotional support 24/7 to those experiencing despair, distress or suicidal feelings. Support is offered via phone, email, letter or face-to-face.

Children

Children First for Health
A guide to health and hospital life for young people, children and families with expert advice from Great Ormond Street Hospital. A fun and interactive site which is targeted at different age groups.

Electronic Quality Information for Patients
EQUIP is a West Midlands NHS website which has a UK directory of quality checked websites of health information and support. Useful support group search for national and regional groups and organisations.

Telford & Wrekin Primary Care Trust
Provides up-to-date information about the PCT and the services available though it. Includes information about GP surgeries, and links to useful websites.
