Doseley Road, Dawley, Telford
Opening Times: Daily, dawn to dusk
Dawley Park is a small Victorian park close to the centre of
Dawley, providing a number of facilities for both formal and
informal recreation.
History:
Dawley Park was established in the early 20th century on land
formerly known as 'The Cricket Grounds'. The land was donated by
William Kenyon Slaney of Hatton Grange, who was a former Colonel in
Her Majesty's Grenadier Guards and colliery owner. Land was also
donated by Mr. Simpson, a leading industrialist of the time.
Dawley Park was officially opened in 1902 to commemorate the
Coronation of King Edward VII. During the inter war years the site
was levelled by the local unemployed, at which stage the tennis
courts and bowling greens were introduced. Maps from 1984 show
three tennis courts, one of which was grass. The grass tennis court
was removed in the 1980's to accommodate an extension to the
bowling green.
Other notable features include the Memorial Gates, located in
Doseley Road entrance, which were donated by the Royal British
Legion to commemorate the local people who died during both World
War I and II. In October 1995 a rose bed was established comprising
120 Peace Roses, to mark the 50th Anniversary of the United
Nations.
Facilities Available: Dawley Park
offers a LEAP (Local Equipped Area for Play) junior play area, a
bowling green, two tarmac tennis courts, shrub beds and a large
open area for informal recreation. There are also benches located
throughout the park.
