Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Beacon Status

Better Local Public Transport 2004-2005
Continuing on the success of the previous transport Beacon Award for Better Access and Mobility, the Beacon Award for Better Local Public Transport proved that the Council has continued to deliver excellent public transport services.

We reversed a 3% p.a. annual decline in bus patronage during the 1990s to show a 19% growth, achieved through the introduction of more Quality Bus Routes and continued improvements to the highway. In addition emphasis on the high quality marketing the services has helped achieve local and national targets in the usage of public transport.

The successful transport solutions were shared with other highway authorities.

In July 2004 at a Learning Exchange Day in London Telford and Wrekin along with the four other Beacon authorities demonstrated the schemes.

In October 2004 an Open Day was held in Telford with a further opportunity to share best practice with other authorities.
A conference 'Making Transport Partnerships Work' was staged in March 2005 when a variety of keynote speakers discussed successful partnership approaches to transport.
Better Access and Mobility 2002-2003
The award recognised the improvements made in accessibility and mobility for residents in the Borough. Since becoming a unitary authority in 1998 numerous improvements had been made including substantial alterations to the bus network and the introduction of the first of the Quality Bus Routes.

Rural transport also improved including the introduction of the Wheels to Work scheme and additional rural bus services were introduced using our own fleet of minibuses.

Highway improvements also improved bus journey times and provided people with direct bus services between Telford Central Bus station and the railway station.

In order to disseminate best practice to other Local Authorities the following events were staged during 2002-2003.

'6 of the Best!' Six well above average authorities' joined with Telford & Wrekin to demonstrate the improvements to transport they had achieved.

Partnering Day. A joint event with our partners to maximise opportunities for joint working and demonstrate how effective partnerships can make a difference to transport delivery.

'Telford's Transport Sayle' a short DVD outlining the many innovative solutions to improving access and mobility within the Borough.
