Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Getting to School Safely

School Pupils in Telford & Wrekin are encouraged to travel to school in active ways such as walking and cycling. Safety and school gate congestion are major concerns for parents and local residents. This section outlines how we are developing Safe Routes to School Projects and how schools can develop a School Travel Plan for themselves.

Almost 36% of pupils in Telford and Wrekin travel to school by car. This represents over 18,000 car journeys each day (Over 3 million car journeys each school year). No wonder there is congestion outside so many of our schools!

Through the Safe Routes to School project, Telford and Wrekin aims to encourage active and safe ways of travelling to schools in the Borough. A number of schools are already involved in the project and we are beginning to see successes as well as learning from our experiences.

For many pupils, travelling to school by car is simply a habit. Like any habit it will be hard to break. In fact we have already learned that it takes time to bring about any changes in travel habits, but by working in partnership with schools and parents we are more likely to be successful. The biggest successes have been at schools that have developed a School Travel Plan. For this reason, the School Travel Plan is the first stage of any Safe Routes to School project in the Borough.
