Safe Cycling and Cycling Proficiency

For many people cycling was their first form of independent travel. These pages give safety advice for cyclists of all ages along with information of training that is available.

Cycle skills and awareness training courses for children from aged 6 years upwards are coordinated by the Road Safety Team. We have a small team of part time cycle training instructors who are available to train both in and out of school time.

The majority of training is carried out through schools, but one-to-one training can be arranged by request.

Basic Biking Skills

This newly developed course is being piloted in 2004 and we hope to offer it more widely during the Summer Term of 2005. It is a two hour off road course for pupils of 6 years and older teaching basic cycling manoeuvres and the rules when cycling on off road cycle routes.

Cycle Awareness Training

This is a six hour course for 10 year olds and above. After a session in the school playground the training takes place on the road.

The children receive a Certificate on successful completion of the course.
