Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Child Road Safety Audit

The concept of Child Safety Audits was introduced in 2000 when the national Road Safety strategy 'Tomorrow's Roads Safer for Everyone' was published. Subsequent guidance from the DfT states that 'Fundamentally a Child Safety Audit is about knowing the child road safety problems within an authority's area, implementing strategies to deal with those problems and subsequently measuring success'.
In line with the guidance we have carried out an audit that examines road traffic casualty data for children within the Borough. For road traffic data a child is classed as any road user before their 16th birthday. Using this definition, children make up 22% of the population of the Borough.
