Road Safety Targets & Achievements |
Since becoming a Unitary Authority in 1998, Telford &
Wrekin has had a number of successes in the field of road safety
and in 2003 and 2007 we were winners of the National Transport
Award for Road Safety.
Between 1994 and 1998 an average of 132 people were killed or
seriously injured on the Borough's roads each year. In recent years
the numbers have been reducing. This section gives more information
about who these accidents are happening to, and how we aim to
reduce them. | |

Background
The Borough's key road safety targets are set by the Department
for Transport:
- to reduce the number of road deaths and serious injuries by 40%
and
- to reduce child deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2010
compared with the average for the years 1994 to 1998
These targets were set in 2000 and because casualties have
reduced at a faster rate than the target, the targets have been
stretched. This is outlined below.
Tomorrow's Roads Safer for Everyone outlines
the national road safety strategy and targets until 2010. The
second Telford & Wrekin Local Transport Plan outlines the
local strategy until 2011
