| Highway structures form an important and integral part
of the highway network, and as such, cannot be considered in
isolation but must be considered in relation to the maintenance of
the highway itself and the overall flexibility of the
network. | |
|
The Engineering Services Business Unit are responsible for
the management of the majority of structures that either carry or
support the highway, for example;
- Bridges
- Retaining Walls
- Underpasses
- Large Culverts
- Special Structures
There are other structure owners that operate in the Telford &
Wrekin area such as the Highways Agency, Network Rail etc.
Management The principles of asset management and
performance measurement are used to reduce the backlog of
maintenance work and to improve the overall condition of the
stock.
The main operations that are incorporated into the management
regime are Inspection, Assessment, Maintenance and
Monitoring. | |

standards |
|
Replacement |
Structure/component reaches the end
of its useable life |
Project Examples:
A442 Footbridge Replacement
A Principal Inspection and Assessment highlighted problems with
the bridge piers in terms of vehicle collision. The preferred
option was to remove the piers and replace the old bridge with a
new, 54m clear span steel bridge.
To minimise all traffic disruption and construction
health and safety issues, the old bridge remained open whilst the
new bridge was fabricated in sections off site and erected over the
A442 during a 45 hour full road closure. The old bridge was then
demolished under a similar closure.
