A floral 40th - winners

The Environmental Maintenance team is helping to mark Telford's 40th birthday this year by planting a flowerbed designed by a Telford youngster.

The team held a competition, inviting children from across Telford and Wrekin to come up with a design for a flowerbed to be grown next to the Elephant & Castle traffic lights in Ketley.

More than 80 colourful and imaginiative entries were received and the judges chose this winning design, below, by 11 year old James Kirton, of Meadows Primary School, in Ketley.

On Wednesday 25th June 2008, James and his classmates from Class 10 visited the site of the flowerbed and helped council officers and contractors to put it into place.

James said he was very excited about seeing his flowerbed grown in flowers. The bed will stay in place until later in the year when the first frosts arrive.

Two other entries also caught the eye of the judges. Highly commended were this colourful design by 10 year old Eleanor Tinker, of St Patrick's Primary School, and this dated flag design by Alice Thompson, also 10, of Wrockwardine Wood Junior School, both below.

Thanks go to everyone who took part in the competition. All 80 entries are currently on display in the reception area of Darby House and also formed part of the council's bigger celebrations to mark 40 years of the town.
