Borough of Telford & Wrekin

Fly posting

As a part of our aim to keep Telford and Wrekin clean, green and safe, we are committed to removing fly posters from the borough and encouraging businesses to use other forms of advertising.
Fly Posting - Cancelled. See below for a more detailed policy
What is fly posting?
Fly posting is putting up unauthorised posters and stickers, usually adverts, in public places. The council is responsible for items attached to the highway, such as trees, bridges, lamp posts, roadsigns and other street furniture.
This can also include larger signs and boards which are placed on verges or attached to fences and gateways.

Why is it a problem?
The council has a duty to keep Telford and Wrekin clean. Fly posting is unsightly and spoils the environment. If it is not removed the posters slowly rot, becoming more unsightly and causing litter. In addition, the businesses involved are gaining an unfair advantage over their law abiding competitors by not paying for advertising space.
Fly posting on the highway is also a distraction to motorists.

What we do about it
As well as removing fly posting, the enforcement team can use existing powers to take action against the people responsible. We have powers to prosecute both the people putting up the material and the businesses being advertised. We can also have an effect on the event being organised by placing 'Cancelled' stickers across the posters while we notify those responsible that they need to remove the advertisements.
