Grass Cutting and Wildflowers |
We are not only responsible for cutting the
grass, we also plant seeds and bulbs to keep Telford looking bright
and blooming every
Spring!
| |
|
We cut the grass around housing estates on average 16
times per year.
Meadows, such as those found on the central reservation of the
Wrekin Retail Park, Wellington, are cut once during the autumn when
all the seeds have fallen, to maintain the wildflowers growing
there.
We try to encourage wildflowers along our roadsides. By adjusting
the times the grass is cut, the wildflowers are allowed to flourish
and enhance the biodiversity of the borough.
Shropshire Wildlife Trust has recently completed a survey into some
of our verges to discover what exciting wildlife and wildflowers we
now have growing in the borough.
Have a look at the results below and then keep an eye out for the
flowers starting to bloom when Spring comes around.
Wellington Retail Park
The site was surveyed in August 2004 and was described as
'fascinating', even though the weather was poor.
A total of 84 different flowers and seeds were found along the
verge near Tesco, along with ladybirds, moths, bees, ants and six
kinds of butterflies.

Wrockwardine Wood Way Despite being
the end of August 2004, the Wildlife Trust surveyed stretches of
roadside along Wrockwardine Wood Way in very wet weather.

Did you know? If the total amount of grass cut per year,
were laid in a strip one metre wide, it would stretch twice around
the
equator!
