Now that the Smokefree legislation has come into force across
Telford and Wrekin, it is anticipated that there may be an increase
in smoking related litter.
The ban from smoking in enclosed public spaces effects all kinds of
business premises and as a result smokers will have to go outside
to smoke.
The fear is that if litter laws are not observed there may be a
detrimental affect on the area.
The council has powers under the Environmental Protection Act
1990 and the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 to issue
Litter Control notices to businesses and land owners asking them to
clear land and take steps to prevent further accumulations.
The Environmental Maintenance team are able to offer help and
advice to businesses and landowners on how to tackle this problem,
their responsibilities and possible implications of doing nothing.
Help with purchasing and positioning of new bins may also be
available. Please contact the Environmental Enforcement Team on
01952 384384.
The team also ran a campaign at the end of September 2007 to
highlight this issue.

Encams (The Keep Britain Tidy Group) have arranged discounts with
various
suppliers of bins and outdoor ashtrays. Also there are several
companies producing
personal ash trays for individual to carry.
We would strongly recommend that members of staff are briefed on
the implications of the new Smoking Ban, the associated litter and
the need to dispose of that litter correctly.
If you notice an increase in litter or witness people littering
then please report it to us on 384384 or
email customer
