Live Heritage

Since its inclusion in the World Heritage List in 1986, the Ironbridge Gorge has been amongst the world’s most important Heritage Sites, alongside such other famous places as the Great Wall of China, Stonehenge and Taj Mahal. Each year, new Sites are added to the list by UNESCO, the United Nations body with responsibility for World Heritage. In July 2004, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee met in Suzhou in China. It agreed 34 new World Heritage Sites, bringing the total number to 788. These new sites included Maritime Liverpool, the UK’s 26th World Heritage Site.

The inclusion of the Ironbridge Gorge within the World Heritage List recognised the far-reaching importance of the events that took place here in the early 18th century involving Abraham Darby I and advances in iron-making. This international recognition of our Borough’s historic contribution to the birth of industrialised society is something that we can all take pride in.

At this early stage in the planning of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Day celebrations, we welcome your ideas and suggestions – plus any offers of help in organising and running the event. World Heritage status is valued across the globe, so there’s plenty to celebrate!
