Regeneration through Heritage has enabled additional work across the World Heritage Site, and has brought together Telford & Wrekin Council, Severn Gorge Countryside Trust and Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust. This partnership has ensured delivery of a number of the key objectives within the World Heritage Management Plan.
Tourism is a crucial part of the local economy, with the museums and attractions of the Ironbridge Gorge providing the basis of significant local industry. Over the last 10/15 years significant European money has been invested in The World Heritage Site, including work on the environment, Museums and Coalport Bridge. This project has enabled further investment in the tourism infrastructure of the area.
This web site provides an opportunity to view the individual projects which comprise the Regeneration through Heritage Package. Many of the projects have now been successfully completed and future updates will show how the remaining projects are progressing. All activity within this Package will be completed in early 2007, however major works continue within the World Heritage Site with 2 significant new projects Lloyds Land Stabilisation and in the future Blists Hill.
When completed, the project will have achieved a range of improvements within the WHS which together will create a much enhanced visitor experience and increase tourism business within the World Heritage Site. In summary, these will help to:
strengthen and maintain the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site's position as one of the region's principal tourist attractions
offer visitors a world class experience and strengthen the area's reputation as a high quality visitor destination
increase the local and regional economic benefits of tourism within the WHS through greater visitor numbers, increased visitor spend, longer visitor stays and increased out-of-season activity
secure the long-term protection of the historical significance and attractiveness of the WHS so that it can continue to provide the focus for a thriving, robust tourism industry
