Special Educational Needs (SEN)

What are Special Educational Needs (SEN)?

Children/young people with special educational needs all have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn than most children of the same age. These children and young people may need extra or different help from that given to other children and young people of the same age.

Children and Young People may have difficulties due to:

  • Learning
  • Communication
  • Behaviour
  • Sensory impairment
  • Physical disability
  • Medical Conditions

Many children/young people will have special educational needs of some kind at some time during their education. Schools can help most children/young people overcome the barriers their difficulties present quickly and easily. Very few children/young people will need extra help for some or all of their time in school.

Help for children/young people with special educational needs will usually be in their local mainstream school or early years setting, sometimes with the help of outside agencies.
