Telford Future - Changes to town centre highways
Central Telford Area Action Plan (CTAAP)
CTAAP was adopted by Telford & Wrekin Council following extensive consultation in March 2011. It provides the framework for development and growth in the Town Centre.
Key objectives are to create:
- A centre with a vibrant heart;
- A distinctive sense of place;
- A place for living;
- A centre with a thriving economy;
- An accessible and connected centre ;
- A centre with a low environmental footprint;
- A green community.
This will entail conversion of the box road to two way working.
As part of these changes Coach Central will become a 20mph Urban Street.
The scheme will be funded through a combination of public and private funds.
In order to promote sustainable travel and economic growth the Department for Transport (DfT) has launched an initiative to allow all local authorities across the country to bid for a share of £560 million, which, if successful will allow local authorities to implement transport schemes which help to reduce carbon emissions and create economic growth.
Telford & Wrekin Council have submitted a bid to the DfT to secure funding to convert the existing box road into two way and to implement an urban street along Coach Central. This will help to provide a safer and more pleasant environment for pedestrians and cyclists to use and will help to provide improved access to new developments, in accordance with the adopted planning document, CTAAP.
The plan of the Telford Town Centre Area shows the outline of the box road area.
We have provided further information on the following pages including artists impressions of how Coach Central might look.
